A'mis Pizza Takeaway. A'mis wasn't a total miss because of the salad dressing. While it's not great that a pizza review begins with salad dressing, the house dressing should be worn in a wedding. A mix of the best parts of Ceaser and Italian, it would dress up any dish. A 9.6 / 10, I mean just world-class salad dressing.
The pizza, on the other hand, comes in at "restaurant average." A 7.1 / 10 pizza score, serviceable for a quick slice, but don't go out of your way. On the chewy, doughy side, the lack of crispiness negated any of the appropriate ratios of sauce to cheese. A hearty 15" pie for $15.43 is a good deal in St. Louis.
The local restaurant has been around for decades. The vibes inside consist of wood chairs, wood paneling, and stained glass windows. A throwback to the old times. Service came in a bit slow for lunch, but we were not in a rush. The server was super friendly. Parking is easy in a dedicated lot.
A'mis Pizza Experience Summary
A'mis turned out to be one of the most requested places from my Reddit thread discussing the best pizza in St. Louis. So, I decided to give A'mis Pizza a shot with my lunch buddies.
On a Tuesday at 12:30 pm, my buddies met me at A'mis, one of the few pizza places open with easy lunchtime hours. It turned out, one of my buddies has been coming here for years and knew the history of the place.
His big insight? Get the house combination salad.
While I confirmed yet again that provel cheese has no right existing in the universe, the salad came with an absolute shining star.
Their Italian-Caesar combo house dressing - a bold blend of anchovy-rich Caesar flavor, Italian herbs, and a heap of Parmesan - stole the show. For those who love Parmesan, this is the salad dressing of dreams.
It was so good that I even tried a bit on my pizza, breaking one of my core tenets of pizza eating - thou shall not put sauce on pizza. I hoped it might elevate the experience (spoiler: it didn't).
I give the pizza a 7.1 / 10, which puts it at a bit above the restaurant average Flood Line. I enjoyed the cheese blend and sauce, but the pizza lacked structural integrity. The undercarriage was a floppy, crisp-less experience, which meant the crust had no crunch.
For 12:30 pm on a Tuesday, grey hairs packed the place. It had to be 75% full, with everyone being over 50. I'm exaggerating a bit on the margins, but not by much.
We had no wait time for food service. The salad came out quickly and the pizza followed behind after it had been made fresh. But, for some reason, the check took forever to turn around. We ended up being there for 1.5 hours, most of which was post-food.
All in all, I would go back for the salad dressing. A thought I'd never thought I'd have.
The Food At A'mis Pizza
I'm going to keep harping on it because it's that good.
The house salad dressing may be worth dueling for. A 9.6 / 10 menu item, I enjoyed everything from the consistency to the after-taste. It was creamy, but the sheer amount of parmesan gave it a crumbly feel to the tongue. The anchovies shone through, but the oregano mellowed out the fishiness.
Just a wonderful creation and worth the visit.
Comparatively, the pizza was a bit of a flop.
It's a decent pie, rating 7.1 out of 10 on my pizza scale. The cheese was flavorful, likely a blend that contained parmesan and reggiano, but the sauce was forgettable.
However, the crust was the real letdown. It lacked crispiness, leaving each bite overly chewy, so much so that my jaw felt it after lunch. After two or three pieces, I was exhausted from all the chewing. This will not be your slice of life if you're after a satisfying, crispy crunch.
At $15.43 for a 15-inch pizza that weighed about 2 lbs, the pricing was downright affordable. It fed two adult men with a slice or two left over. A'mis offers a good deal on pizza, with no complaints in that department.
My buddies at lunch were much less impressed with the pizza than I was. They gave it a 6.4 and 6.6 respectively.
However, the general consensus at the table was that Reddit had no basis for complaining about this pizza missing from my best pizza list.
And a bit of a rant on provel cheese. I think native St. Louis have had their taste buds altered. This worm-looking, vomit-adjacent-flavored cheese has no home on salad, never mind pizza.
A'mis Pizza Atmosphere And Miscellaneous
Our server was great--super friendly, and he answered all my random questions. We arrived a bit staggered, but he let us sit, allowing me to wait and wave at my friends as they came in. Really nice guy.
The restaurant only had about three servers, and it was pretty full. Around 75% capacity seems like a lot for noon on a random Tuesday. It was mostly a grey-haired crowd. The kind of place where my buddy's dad has been coming his whole life.
There was even a guy doing paperwork on paper at one of the tables.
Lunch ended up taking about an hour and a half, with 20-30 minutes of that spent just waiting for the check at the end. The food itself came out relatively quickly. The salads arrived fast, which was great since I'd skipped breakfast and was pretty hungry.
There didn't seem to be any rush to get us our check and wrap up, though I think if we'd pushed, we might have gotten it faster.
So, no major issues with the service overall; it was just on the slow side. Ordering a pizza understandably takes 15-20 minutes to cook, but they were in no rush to get us out.
Parking At A'mis Pizza
Parking is in a dedicated lot. Even with the place about 75% full in a small shopping center, there was no problem finding parking.
The street wasn't busy, so it was easy to get in and out from both directions.
