Baker's Dozen Donuts Takeaway. We got a literal and figurative mixed bag of donuts on our visits to Baker's Dozen Donuts. In total, I've tried seven donuts, from glazed to apple fritters. Unfortunately, most of them weren't very good. My favorite, at 7.1 / 10 on the donut score, would be the cinnamon sugar. The light cake dough lets the sugary coating do the talking. The rest of the donuts were all sub-6.
My four-year-old refused to eat the plain donut with chocolate frosting and rainbow sprinkles, which was a first. My older son's plain glazed tasted like lemon. The cinnamon bun came out a bit dry and lacked enough cinnamon for me.
I feel bad writing that because I love the vibe. A family-run establishment for over 30 years, it's the kind of small donut place that should knock your socks off. The working class vibes and clientele can get a donut for $1.15, priced very fairly. Cinnamon rolls and fritters cost an extra $1 to $2. Parking in a dedicated lot at the front. Tip: They run out of donuts at various times of the day. The earlier you get there, the better selection you'll have. They ran out by 9:30 am on a Thursday but were totally full at 7:30 am on a Saturday.
Baker's Dozen Donuts Experience Summary
I had a hankering for a donut. It was a Thursday morning. The kids had finished heading off to school. And I needed something sweet.
When I grabbed the keys to leave my wife gave me a puzzled "Where are you going?"
"Donut," I replied.
After looking at Google Maps, Baker's Dozen turned out to be the closest non-Schnucks, non-Dunkin donut place nearby. Shnucks makes surprisingly great donuts for $1, earning it my 7 / 10 baseline for comparisons, but I wanted something homemade today.
Located off of Page Ave in Overland, Baker's Dozen fits that bill. It has the kind of hole-in-the-wall, mom-and-pop vibe I was hoping for.
Walking in, you're greeted by a counter, a man, and his donuts.
All of my go-tos were picked clean this Thursday, so I went with what was left. A vanilla long john and a cinnamon sugar. At $1.15 per donut, that's incredibly fairly priced and a better deal than Dunkin, although Schnucks is a bit cheaper at $1.
I took a bite of the cinnamon sugar out the door in a minute and back in the car. That totally hit the spot, with a light and fluffy cake dough coated in a thin layer of cinnamon sugary goodness. Just the right amount of coating falls into your lap, and the rest goes on your cheeks.
Delicious donut eating.
My first thought mid-bite, besides what a fun donut, was, "I'll need to bring my kids here when they have the full selection." And that's what I did a couple of weeks later…
The Food At Baker's Dozen Donuts
Baker's Dozen Donuts has donuts and coffee. I've never had the coffee. On the donut side, I've tasted the following set of donuts over two visits, listed in my favorite order:
I feel really bad about giving out these ratings, but with the exception of the cinnamon sugar, I would rather get a Schnucks donut. The place is everything I want in a local donut shop, but it just didn't make the cut.
The two ones that really got me were the plain glazed and chocolate frosting. The plain glazed had an overwhelming lemon flavor. My eight-year-old couldn't really eat it because it was so lemony.
And then the Plain Chocolate Frosting With Sprinkles, I don't know what happened here. My four-year-old actively refused to eat it. I took a bite to confirm his analysis. The donut just didn't have any flavor. The icing and the dough both just had nothing going. The light texture of the dough also felt a bit off. Maybe we just got a bad batch, but I've never seen him not eat a donut.
I can go into more detail on what I didn't like about the others, but the general theme was that they just didn't hit the donut sweet spot of a mix of fatty and sugary goodness while still being moist and juicy.
Baker's Dozen Donuts Atmosphere And Miscellaneous
The atmosphere is perfect at Baker's Dozen. The owner greets you from behind just cases and cases of donuts. The menu basically just lists prices per donut, and there's a coffee machine in the corner.
They've been around since before I was born. Run by the same family. It's just the perfect local business. You can tell that the donuts run in their blood.
They sell out of donuts at random times each day. I went at 9:30 am on a Tuesday, and they were sold out. But he told me that the day was particularly busy. The previous day, he had the display full at the same time.
Parking At Baker's Dozen Donuts
They have a dedicated lot for the strip mall that offers plenty of parking. Getting into the lot can be a bit tricky going west on Page as you have to make a left after making a left at the light. Sometimes, a car waiting at the light will block you, making you maneuver a bit.
