Pizza-A-Go-Go Takeaway. Wake me up before you go go grab a pizza at Pizza-A-Go-Go. A down-to-earth pizza joint in the Lindenwood Park Neighborhood. Surprisingly, solid pizza earns it a top-five ranking in St. Louis with an 8.0 / 10 pizza score. Deliciously crunchy crust with the appropriate ratio of cheese to sauce. You could taste a hint of oregano in each bite. However, there was a bit too much grease, and the crust lacked the fluffy chew you'd find in some of the better pizzas. At $13.50 for a 15", it's one of the more affordable items in St. Louis.
A throwback to an older time, Pizza-A-Go-Go sticks to its roots and offers a cash-only menu from a true pizza place. From an unassuming brick building, the half-dozen tables look directly into the pizza kitchen, where the team seemed appropriately busy for a Friday night. You have to call in an order because there's no online ordering form. You'll find parking in the dedicated lot or on any side street nearby.
Pizza-A-Go-Go Experience Summary
I started on my Reddit-based tour of St. Louis pizza over six months ago. And it came to its thrilling conclusion in the most exciting of places, just south of 44, Lindenwood.
The stop?
Pizza-A-Go-Go.
I honestly didn't have high expectations, but it turned out to be surprisingly good. The place has been around for 50 years, and it's your classic pizza joint - just a few tables and a counter that looks into the kitchen. It's old school in many ways:
No online ordering
No credit cards, just cash.
No frills. It's a rough-and-tumble, blue-collar spot.
After making the trek across the street to the ATM in the bar, I came back to two warm pizzas waiting for me.
I raced out to the car, took a quick pictures and dove in to a surprisingly delicious slice of pizza. I give it an 8.0 / 10 pizza score, securing it a spot in the top five best pizzas in St. Louis for me at the moment. They get the undercarriage and crust deliciously right with the correct balance of sauce to cheese.
However, beware of the grease. This pizza pie could be put on a clothesline to drip dry a bit.
The Food At Pizza-A-Go-Go
Overall, I'd rate the pizza an 8.0 / 10. It's in my top five in St. Louis, currently at number five. The crust was super crunchy, which I loved, and the undercarriage was firm. Each bite had a satisfying crunch, with the crust delivering an extra punch.
The sauce and cheese were balanced nicely, with the sauce giving off a subtle but strong oregano flavor in every bite.
My big gripe is that it's very oily, likely due to the type of mozzarella they use. I suspect they use full mozzarella instead of part-skim, which leads to more fat rendering out and making the pizza greasy.
The nit pick complaint is that the crust didn't have any fluff. While Pizza Head's crust has a bit of chew to it along with the crunch, Pizza Go-Go's crust was just straight-up crunchy, with no chewiness.
The pizza prices are reasonable. A 15-inch pizza costs $13.50 and weighs 24 ounces, which breaks down to about 56 cents an ounce--right in line with the average price for pizza in St. Louis. However, since the pizza is only 15 inches, I had to order two for our family of four, plus my dad, who was in town.
For five people, including two kids, it wasn't a one-pizza solution like at Pizza Head, where I can get a large cheese pizza for $18. We did end up with leftovers for lunch the next day, so it worked out as two meals.
If you're flying solo on a Friday night, they offer a 12-inch pizza for $8.50. That's a solid deal, considering the size and quality.
That said, it's still a very good pizza. I wouldn't drive 25 minutes again just to grab it on a Friday night, but if you're in the area, it's a great neighborhood spot. An 8.0 is a strong score, and I highly recommend it.
Pizza-A-Go-Go Atmosphere And Miscellaneous
Pizza-A-Go-Go is a true throwback "pizza place." An old brick building houses the space with minimal signage, fitting perfectly with the neighborhood's blue-collar vibe.
The service was great. I called in my order, and it was ready exactly 35 minutes later, right on time at 5:35 PM on a Friday night. No issues there. I imagine wait times could get longer as you get later into the night on the weekend.
Pro Tip: They only accept cash, so I had to run across the street to a bar to get some. Not a big deal for me, but it could be annoying if you're hit with ATM fees.
Overall, Pizza Go-Go is a real down-to-earth, quality neighborhood pizza place.
Parking At Pizza-A-Go-Go
